The Sunday after my birthday, Mom, Dad, Kaitlin and I drove down to Madera where we met up with Paige and Coleman to participate in the Madera Wine Trail. We started off at Ficklin Vineyard. Ficklin was by far the best wine (and port) that we tried, of the 5 wineries that we visited, that day. And the ports were the best. Ficklin is the oldest port maker in the US, and if I remember correctly (Paige, correct me if I’m wrong) they are also the only true port maker in the US that can call their product port because they were grandfathered in. Good stuff. And I’m happy to announce that Paige was just hired on to work for them full time!
We did stop at a handful of other wineries. But, honestly, they weren’t that great. The potential is there though. Quady is good, but it’s also more on the sweeter side of things. At the last winery we stopped at, Birdstone, we ended up running into one of my Dad’s college roommates. Small world. Although, not that small of a world being as we were in the area where he and his family live.
All in all it was a good day! A good way to spend a day during your birthday weekend for sure. Thanks Paiger for suggesting it and opening our eyes to the wines of Madera.
(although I carried my camera around all day, these are the only 2 pictures I walked away with.)
